Ms. Nelson

Jessica Nelson, a Tri-County educator recently had the opportunity to contribute to the future of Missouri’s state assessments by serving on the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) End-of-Course (EOC) Content and Bias Review Committee on June 9-10.

The committee consisted of six educators from across Missouri who were hand-selected by DESE Director of Social Studies Tyler Jamie and DESE Assessment Content Director Dixie Grupe. Their task was to review nearly 60 newly developed Government End-of-Course assessment questions for content accuracy, alignment with state standards, and potential bias.

The reviewed questions will undergo additional field testing and evaluation before potentially being included on Missouri state assessments during the 2028-2029 school year.

According to Jessica Nelson, the review process was both challenging and rewarding. Committee members carefully examined each question, drawing upon their expertise in government and social studies standards while participating in detailed discussions about revisions and improvements.

The experience also provided valuable insight into the assessment development process. Participants learned how test questions are created, the methodology behind question design and answer choices, and the characteristics that distinguish effective assessment items.

Beyond the professional development opportunities, Ms. Nelson  highlighted the value of collaborating with fellow government educators from around the state. “It was exciting to work alongside teachers who share the same passion and dedication for government education,” she said.

DESE and its assessment partner, Data Recognition Corporation (DRC), hosted the event and provided accommodations, meals, and networking opportunities for participants throughout the two-day session.

Following the committee’s work, Grupe commended that Jessica Nelson’s contributions and indicated that the teacher will continue to be involved in the End-of-Course assessment review process in the future.

The experience marks a significant professional achievement and reflects Tri-County’s commitment to educational excellence and student success across Missouri.
